The Bear has origins as far back as the 12th Century. Probably the best known as being the inn where they changed the horses on the mail run from Cardiff to Swansea. During the 17th Century Napoleon's troops were held in the ‘Bear Pit' en route to London!!

Nowadays, the hotel is famed for it's fine home cooked food, friendly atmosphere and good ale. The hotel is on the main high street of the beautiful town of Cowbridge. This small quaint market town boasts some fabulous shops, lingering walks around the Roman wall and some of the most beautiful town houses.

Pyle & Kenfig Golf Course.

If it didn’t have a royal neighbour, P&K would enjoy a far wider reputation. It has many fine qualities that distinguish from Royal Porthcawl, as competitors in the 2002 Amateur Championship discovered when both courses hosted the qualifying rounds of the tournament. P&K possesses much higher dunes and deeper, disconcerting valleys in a layout that offers plenty of diversity

The course is laid out in two loops of nine holes and although each half tests the golfer, the second nine poses more difficulties. As with all great courses ‘P & K’ finishes with three extremely testing holes. All over 400 yards, well bunkered and designed perfectly to challenge the very best of golfers.

Southerndown Golf Course.

Bracken to the left of you, bracken to the right and a fairway rising up to the sky.

The maestro Henry Cotton described the first here as one of the most difficult opening holes he’d encountered. Need I say more...

The Bear in Cowbridge was the ideal place for us to have a few drinks after our rounds of golf, it was actually quite lively on the Friday and Saturday. P&K is one of those places that just lets the course do the talking.

A no frills clubhouse but a true links course, the back nine being a real test again in the wind.

Thanks very much Mark….. the trip opened our eyes to a lot more and for that we will return one day.
